About the Team

The Southwest United (SWU)97 Boys are committed to playing soccer at the elite level.

2012

  • During the 2011/2012 indoor season, the boys competed in the EIYSA U16 Tier I league to gain experience against older competitors.
  • The SWU 97 boys will represent EIYSA at the 2012 U16 Tier II indoor provincials in Sherwood Park the weekend of March 16th. 
  • Beginning March 22nd, the team will compete in the invitational 2012 Whitecaps FC College Showcase.  This tournament is a great kick-off to the outdoor season and will feature opponents from the EA Sports BC Soccer Premier League, and allow the team and players to demonstrate their talents to college and university coaches for scholarship opportunities. 
  • Feature team with the Green and Gold Soccer Academy for the spring session.
  • Green and Gold Academy Director Len Vickery is the SWU 97 Boys Technical Director and will continue working with the team and helping with training sessions. 

2011 was an exciting year for the team. In addition, to 3 – 4 practices a week as well as league games, the team benefited from a number of other challenging training opportunities:

  • Most of the team traveled to Florence and Rome, Italy from March 23 through April 4 with the University of Alberta’s Green and Gold Soccer Academy. The academy team was hosted by the famous AC Fiorentina Serie A club team. In addition to practice and competition against the AC Fiorentina youth squads, the team also had competitive games against other academy squads including Audace Legnaia and Floria in Florence and Lazio in Rome.
  • SWU 97 boys were a winter and spring feature team with the Green and Gold Soccer Academy and benefited from the academy’s coaching expertise, training program and outstanding facilities.
  • Len Vickery (U of A Golden Bears' soccer head coach) provided technical direction and coaching services throughout the year.
  • Pre-season camp in the Lower Mainland, BC from April 28 through May 3 with friendly matches against two teams from BC’s newly created high performance league as well as a BC provincial team.
  • Pre-season technical training session provided by the Southwest United technical staff.
  • Goalkeepers provided specialized training through the Last Line of Defense goalkeeper program.
  • Weeklong training camp with coaches from the Rangers Football Club’s youth program and European Coerver Training
