July 2010
North Carolina University Girls' Camp

Friday, June 30, marked the day when South West United U16 girls hopped a red eye for a five day soccer camp excursion in North Carolina. The girls were greeted by other soccer players from the Southern and Western States; our girls especially made a wonderful connection with a soccer team from Louisiana. The camp was intense, early rising, great food, sunshine and heat, staying hydrated; with much training, endurance training, technical training, foot work, demonstrations, scrimmages, and our own World Cup Tournament. The day would always end by all teams meeting in the courtyard for a talk and stories from Anson Dorrance, head coach of the North Carolina Women’s Soccer Team. Anson always left the girls thinking and inspired! The girls were surrounded with core values embodied by North Carolina’s soccer team and various key messages; but the message that stood out and was always repeated was that you do not have to be the best player on the team to be successful; what you need in order to succeed is: competitive fire, self-discipline and self-belief. Our excursion ended with our girls wanting to return…to learn more…to be further inspired!

Girls Win Gold in Slurpee Cup
Southwest United 1995 Girls' took GOLD in the West Zone Slurpee Tournament June 4-6. With nothing less than a united spirit, the team's cooperation and relentless effort yielded success. They won all 3 of their games in the qualifying round, defeating the West Raiders and Calgary’s SWU and NWU teams en route to a 2:0 win in the gold medal game against Calgary’s SWU Storm. The girls’ creative attacking and solid defending resulted in 17 scored goals with only 2 allowed. Congratulations to the team and coaching staff for their victory sweeping the gold medal and laying the groundwork for more success to come!
